Steps in the Horse Buying Process

1. Find a horse—through your trainer, through advertising sources such as print or online classifieds, or by word of mouth.

2. Contact the seller and ask questions. Answer any that the seller has for you.

3. Schedule a visit to try the horse. Bring your trainer. If you like the horse, be prepared to make an offer and put down a deposit.

4. Schedule a prepurchase exam with your veterinarian.

5. If the horse passes the prepurchase exam, bring him home!

How to Find Horses for Sale

Online sales sites

Print magazines or local horsey newsletters with classified sections

Through your trainer—her professional contacts may be an excellent resource.

Word of mouth—ask around at horse shows and through all your local horse contacts, such as your vet, farrier, and friends. Let everyone know what you’re looking for.

Riding stables—inquire at local riding stables for lesson horses that are no longer able to stand up to the rigors of their professional lives, but might make good prospects for backyard trail horses.

Sale barns and dealers—tread carefully here, as dealers are in it for the bottom line rather than for the best interests of horses and clients. Bring a trainer or knowledgeable friend, and insist on a prepurchase exam.
